"Deep Throat" porn actor Harry Reems dies after turbulent life

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 23 Maret 2013 | 11.35

(Reuters) - Porn actor Harry Reems, who made his name starring opposite Linda Lovelace in the 1972 movie "Deep Throat", has died at the age of 65, according to his wife Jeanne.

She told the New York Times that her husband died on Tuesday in hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was reported to have been battling multiple health issues, including pancreatic cancer.

His death comes just months before the release of "Lovelace", a biographical film starring Amanda Seyfried in the title role and Adam Brody as Reems which will put the spotlight back on one of the 1970s' most active porn actors.

Reems's rollercoaster life off set reads like a script for a Hollywood movie as he transitioned from the marines to porn movies to alcoholism and then to religion and suburban life.

He was born Herbert Streicher into a Jewish family from Brooklyn, New York, and joined the Marine Corps after school.

After leaving the marines, he struggled to make a career as a stage actor in New York so, needing money, worked in a number of pornographic films.

But his breakthrough came when director Gerard Damiano hired him as lighting director on "Deep Throat". The original male lead failed to show up so Reems stepped in, playing a doctor helping Lovelace with a sexually sensitive area in her throat.

"Deep Throat" was the first porn film widely shown in theatres and made an estimated $600 million at the box office -- although Reems claimed he only received $800 for his role.

It also became the nickname for a source who helped Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein investigate the Watergate scandal that led to President Richard Nixon's resignation.

But the film also caused much outrage and Reems was convicted of obscenity in 1976. He admitted that the prospect of a five year jail sentence and trial put him under enormous pressure and set him on a path to alcoholism.

He launched a high-profile appeal backed by celebrities including Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty and the conviction was eventually overturned.

Reems, with a bushy black moustache and hairy chest exposed by his open shirts, went on to star in several other porn movies after "Deep Throat" but demand for his services started to wane by the 1980s as his battles with alcohol increased.

By the mid-1980s he was bankrupt, drinking heavily and homeless. It was not until 1989 that he sobered up, converted to Christianity, obtained a real estate license and married Jeanne in 1990.

In a 2005 interview with the Guardian, Reems described his battle with alcohol, his regret at going into the porn industry and the way his life had changed since he became sober.

"I'm happier today than ever. I saved my own life. I'm content with the way I conduct myself with my marriage, my home, my business," said Reems.

"I live in a small town where everybody knows everybody and nobody thinks of me as a porn actor."

China's glamorous new first lady an instant internet hit

By Ben Blanchard

BEIJING (Reuters) - With a smile on her face, dressed in a simple black peacoat and carrying an elegant unbranded bag, China's new first lady, Peng Liyuan, stepped into the international limelight on Friday and became an instant internet sensation back home.

Stepping off the aircraft in Moscow - the first stop of President Xi Jinping's maiden foreign trip since assuming office - Peng's glamorous appearance and obvious affection for her portly husband caused Chinese microbloggers to swoon.

"So beautiful, Peng Liyuan, so beautiful! How composed, how magnanimous," wrote one user on China's popular Twitter-like service Sina Weibo.

"Who could not love such a lady as this and be insanely happy with her?" wrote another.

Taobao, an online shopping site similar to eBay and Amazon, quickly began offering for sale coats in the same style of Peng's, advertising it as "the same style as the first lady's".

Others wondered what brand her bag and shoes were.

"Her shoes are really classic, and who designed her bag?" wrote a third Weibo user.

Peng is best known in China as a singer, and for many years was arguably better known and certainly more popular than her husband.

People who have met her and know her say that Peng is vivacious and fun to be around, though she was ordered to take a back seat after Xi became vice president in 2008 as he was being groomed for state power.

But she is expected to be given high-profile events of her own to attend on Xi's sweep through Russia, Tanzania, South Africa and the Republic of Congo on a week-long trip, as the government tries to soften the image of China abroad.

Peng has won praise for her advocacy for pet causes, most notably for children living with HIV/AIDS, and may visit charities related to this while abroad.

Unlike the baby-kissing politicians of the West, China's Communist Party works hard to keep its top leaders from appearing too human - to the point that for many, even their official birthdates and the names of their children are regarded as a state secret.

Xi and Peng are different. Their romance has been the subject of dozens of glowing reports and pictorials in state media.

"When he comes home, I've never thought of it as though there's some leader in the house. In my eyes, he's just my husband," Peng gushed in an interview with a state-run magazine in 2007, describing Xi as frugal, hardworking and down-to-earth.

Peng is Xi's second wife, and the two have a daughter studying at Harvard under an assumed name. Xi divorced his first wife, the daughter of a diplomat.

Chinese first wives have traditionally kept a low profile over the past few decades, because of the experience of Jiang Qing, the widow of the founder of Communist China, Mao Zedong.

Jiang was the leader of the "Gang of Four" that wielded supreme power during the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution. She was given a suspended death sentence in 1981 for the deaths of tens of thousands during that period of chaos.

Yoko Ono tweets against guns showing Lennon's bloody glasses

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Yoko Ono has taken up arms against gun violence with a raft of Twitter postings, including a photograph of blood-stained glasses apparently worn by John Lennon when he was shot and killed more than 30 years ago.

"Over 1,057,000 people have been killed by guns in the USA since John Lennon was shot and killed on 8 Dec 1980," Ono, the former Beatle's widow, tweeted.

Below the message she included a photo of what appears to be Lennon's blood-stained eyeglasses, perched on a ledge with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop.

Lennon was shot and killed outside the Dakota apartment building in Manhattan as he and Ono returned to their home. Ono still lives there.

The bold text above the graphic photo is black, except for the words "Over 1,057,000" and "John Lennon," which appear in bright red.

Ono posted several more messages, including: "The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience. After 33 years our son Sean and I still miss him. Yoko Ono Lennon," and "31,537 people are killed by guns in the USA every year. We are turning this beautiful country into a war zone."

Earlier this week, Ono tweeted filmmaker Michael Moore asking for his support.

"Michael Moore @mmflint Join me to kick off a mass movement against gun violence from your living room on Sat March 23 - Yes! love, yoko".

In other Twitter messages Ono, 80, linked an Oxfam video about global arms and the ammunition trade, a newspaper article on actors joining the anti-gun movement and a YouTube video of the parents of girl killed in a shooting.

Paternity suit dropped against basketball legend Michael Jordan

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 19 Maret 2013 | 11.35

By David Beasley

ATLANTA (Reuters) - An Atlanta woman who says basketball legend Michael Jordan is the father of her 16-year-old son has dropped her paternity suit against him.

Pamela Smith, 48, filed a paternity suit against Jordan last month seeking child support. Jordan denies he is the father of the child and has also filed a counterclaim seeking sanctions against Smith for making false claims.

Smith acknowledged in a previous divorce proceeding that her now ex-husband is the father of the child, according to Jordan's lawyers.

The case has not been settled, Smith's attorney, Randy Kessler, told Reuters on Monday. His client has voluntarily dismissed the case "without prejudice" which means she can re-file it later if she chooses, Kessler added.

"She began this case without an attorney and did her best to file what she believed to be a legally appropriate case," Kessler said.

"She then hired our firm just before the first court appearance. Ms. Smith has relied on our advice and determined that dismissal at this time, without prejudice, is in her son's best interests," he said.

In a statement, Estee Portnoy, Michael Jordan's spokeswoman, confirmed that the suit has been dropped and said, "There has been no settlement or money paid to Ms. Smith."

Jordan, 50, is widely hailed as the best basketball player of all time and was a member of six NBA championship teams with the Chicago Bulls. He is majority owner of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats team.

John Mayoue, Jordan's attorney, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment on the case.

Last week, Smith asked a Georgia court to force Jordan to submit to a DNA test to prove or disprove whether he is the father.

"My son has the right to know who his father is," Smith told reporters after the hearing. "He has had an issue with it over the years."

Lindsay Lohan avoids jail in plea deal, gets 90 days in rehab

By Eric Kelsey

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actress Lindsay Lohan avoided jail on Monday but was ordered to spend three months in a locked rehabilitation facility and undertake 30 days of community labor in a plea bargain over charges arising from a June car crash.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James Dabney said Lohan, whose once promising Hollywood career has been wrecked by legal woes and erratic behavior, must also undergo psychotherapy for 18 months and sentenced her to two years' probation.

The plea deal was struck on the first day of a scheduled trial when the 26-year-old "Mean Girls" actress agreed to plead no contest to charges that she lied to police when she said she was not behind the wheel after her Porsche sports car smashed into a truck on June 8, 2012, in Santa Monica, California.

Lohan, who is still on probation for a 2011 conviction for stealing a necklace, had faced the prospect of being sent to jail if she was convicted on the latest charges, or if she was deemed to have violated the terms of her 2011 probation.

Under Monday's plea bargain, however, she was given a suspended 180 day jail term that will not be invoked unless she violates the terms of the agreement with prosecutors. It was announced after prosecutors and Lohan's attorney met with Dabney in chambers for more than two hours before the trial opened.

Dabney told Lohan, who spends much of her time in New York City, to stay out of cars and out of trouble.

"A suggestion: Don't drive. You're in New York, you don't need a car. ... This is it. If you violate your probation we're not going to be having these discussions," Dabney said after reading out the plea agreement.

LOHAN ATTORNEY HAPPY WITH DEAL

Lohan left court without speaking to reporters, but her attorney, Mark Heller, told reporters he was happy with the deal.

"I'm very, very satisfied with the results today ... I think that the prosecutors treated her fairly. I'm very confident that you won't be seeing Lindsay Lohan in any criminal courts any time in the future," Heller said.

"Today marks the first day of the rest of her life and her comeback is before her," he said.

Lohan's father, Michael, heckled Heller during his news conference and accused him of lying to the actress and keeping her in the dark about the plea agreement.

The actress has been jailed or placed under house arrest for short periods numerous times since 2007, including three times in 2011. She has also spent at least five periods in rehab in the last six years.

She underwent court-ordered psychological counseling in 2012, and has claimed in numerous TV and magazine interviews that she is a changed woman and understands her past mistakes.

Lohan arrived 45 minutes late for her trial on Monday after taking an overnight flight to Los Angeles from New York and dashing through rush-hour traffic to the courthouse.

She had previously pleaded not guilty to reckless driving, obstructing police, and lying to police about who was driving the car in Santa Monica in June 2012.

Lohan made her name as a cute, freckled 11-year-old in Disney's 1998 movie "The Parent Trap" and went on to find commercial and critical success in films like "Freaky Friday" and "Bobby."

But she has not made a feature film since the independent thriller "Machete" in 2010. Her last effort - a comeback performance as late actress Elizabeth Taylor in the TV movie "Liz & Dick" in November - was largely panned by critics.

Justin Timberlake puts the sexy into married life in new album

Written By Unknown on Senin, 18 Maret 2013 | 11.35

By Piya Sinha-Roy

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - After making the transition from child star and boy band heartthrob to movie star, Justin Timberlake is returning to music with his first album since 2006, cementing his grown-up status with a record inspired by his new marriage.

Timberlake, 32, officially releases "The 20/20 Experience" on Tuesday. But the 10-track record of smooth love songs with a throwback R&B sound is already No. 1 on the iTunes charts after it was streamed online last week.

The album is Timberlake's first since "FutureSex/LoveSounds" which spawned hit pop singles "Sexyback" and "What Goes Around...Comes Around."

Although lead single "Suit & Tie," featuring rapper Jay-Z, failed to meet sales expectations on its first week of release in January, the album is expected to sell well following weeks of promotion including a Grammy Awards show performance and a stint by Timberlake on TV sketch show "Saturday Night Live."

Industry sources cited by Billboard said "The 20/20 Experience" could sell 500,000 copies in its first week, and easily give Timberlake the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 album charts.

"The 20/20 Experience" sees Timberlake embracing his status as a married man after his wedding to actress Jessica Biel in October 2012.

The singer draws on lazy summer romances for the majority of his songs, with slow-tempo swing rhythms on tracks such as "Pusher Girl Love," where Timberlake describes his addiction to a girl.

Jason Lipshutz at Billboard magazine gave the album an 88 out of 100 rating, saying that while the singer did not replicate the edgy pop sounds of earlier hits on his "FutureSex" album, he "has offered us something more complicated, although no less accessible."

Rolling Stone magazine's Jody Rosen praised the singer for being "such a charismatic and effortlessly appealing singer, dancer and showman," and called the album "Timberlake's neo-soul record."

FROM HEARTTHROB TO ENTREPRENEUR

Timberlake has barely put a foot wrong in his transition from child star in the "Mickey Mouse Club" to popular boy band N'Sync, through to solo entertainer, actor and entrepreneur.

He has appeared in movies "The Social Network" and "Bad Teacher;" launched his own record label, Tennman Records; added clothing designer to his credits with label William Rast; and invested in social networking site MySpace.

His all-rounder status was showcased last week on "Saturday Night Live," where he sang, danced and acted - and boosted ratings for the NBC show to a 14-month high.

In July he will embark on a "Legends of the Summer" tour of North American stadiums along with Jay-Z, and the pair will headline a London music festival in the same month.

While "Don't Hold The Wall" - a steamy dance floor track with explicit connotations - harkens back to Timberlake's "Sexyback" days, Biel is often at the forefront of the singer's mind in the new album. "That Girl" is a sweet throwback R&B love song, while new single "Mirrors" is an ode to his new wife.

Los Angeles Times reviewer Mikael Wood gave the album three out of four stars, saying "Timberlake holds (the album) together too, with lyrics that stay resolutely on the topic of romance."

Not all critics are swooning. Alexis Petridis of Britain's Guardian newspaper gave "The 20/20 Experience" three out of five stars, but slammed Timberlake's lyrics, which he called "awful."

"It's not that the lyrics are exclusively about sex; it's that Timberlake writes about it in a way that suggests he's desperate to add some kind of musical equivalent of the Bad Sex award to his six Grammys and four Emmys," Petridis said.

Rap artist Tone Loc collapses on stage in Iowa: reports

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Grammy-winning rapper Tone Loc reportedly collapsed on stage late Saturday night during a performance in Des Moines, Iowa.

Amateur video posted Sunday on the Des Moines Register newspaper website showed several emergency personnel kneeling over a prone body on a stage at the Bridge Bash, a St. Patrick's Day concert featuring Loc and other hip hop artists.

The condition of Loc, who was born Anthony Terrell Smith, was not known on Sunday. A representative did not immediately return a call for comment.

The newspaper said on Sunday that several news staffers attending the event reported that Loc completed a song and then fell onto the stage. The audience was ushered out of the stage area about five minutes later, according to the report.

The singer, whose hits include "Funky Cold Medina" and "Wild Thing," collapsed on stage in Florida in 2009 and in Atlanta in 2011, according to NBC News.

Loc burst onto the music scene in the late 1980s. He received two Grammys in 1990 for Best New Artist and Best Rap Solo Performance. He has also starred in more than a dozen movies, including "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" and "Heat."

Mesquite Woman Killed Family, Self

Angelica Vazquez shot and killed her husband, Marcelo Vazquez, and two young adult children, 21-year-old Paulina Vazquez (left) and 18-year-old Alejandro Vazquez (right), before killing herself in their suburban Mesquite home, according to the Dallas County Medical Examiner.

Four Found Dead Inside Mesquite Home

On Thursday, we expect to learn the names of the four people found dead inside a Mesquite home.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the cause of deaths of four people found inside a Mesquite home as a murder-suicide.

The Dallas County medical examiner said the deaths of 44-year-old Marcelo Vazquez, 18-year-old Alejandro Roman Vazquez and 21-year-old Paulina Belen Vazquez have been ruled as homicides.

The death of Angelica Vazquez, 43, wife and mother, has been ruled as a suicide. A handgun was located on the floor in the master bedroom near her body, according to Mesquite police.

Detectives are still investigating a motive.

Mesquite police say the four bodies were found inside the home in the1400 block of Paintbrush Street four days after receiving a 911 call reporting gunfire.

Police officials told NBC 5 that officers were called to the home at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday after someone reported hearing gunfire.

The responding officers said they did not see anything unusual and did not see signs of forced entry. They said they were unable to reach the residents.

The officers left after talking with a neighbor who reported hearing and seeing nothing out of the ordinary. Officers returned to the house two more times Saturday morning but were still unable to reach anyone who lived at the home.

Police said the same officer who initially responded to the call returned to the home Wednesday morning and noticed mail in the mailbox and newspapers in the yard. Officials then made the decision to enter the home. Once inside, police discovered the four bodies.

The bodies of two men and two women were found in four separate rooms of the house. Each victim had been shot, Lt. Bill Hedgpeth said.

Police identified the victims on Thursday.

"We process every death scene the same way," he said. "We look for any type of forensic evidence and any type of evidence at all that would lead us in a particular direction. We keep an open mind about it, because we want to see where that evidence will take us."

Police have released few details about the case.

A family friend told NBC 5 that Paulina attended the University of North Texas and that her brother Alejandro graduated from Mesquite High School last year.

"It was just what I thought was just a happy family," said Gustavo Herrera, who told reporters he went to his senior prom with the 21-year-old victim.

Herrera and other friends were gathered outside of the victims' home until well past dark Wednesday night.

"There wasn't anything bad going on with the family," said neighbor Alex Turrubiartes, who graduated high school with the 18-year-old. "There was nothing -- no trouble, nothing; normal."

The investigation into the deaths is ongoing.

The city of Arlington has a backlog of infrastructure projects in the works.

The city hopes to raise $20 million this summer by selling bonds on the capital market. Revenues generated from the bond sales will fund the city's critical projects.

"We've got a backlog, so it's important that as aggressively as we can we try to meet those needs," Councilman Jimmy Bennett said.

The city is proposing nearly $55 million in capital budget projects this year.

A majority of the $20 million is expected to go to the Public Works Department for significant road repairs, as well as upgrades to parks and buildings. The City Council is also considering a possible new fire station.

The city plans to also address water and sewer system needs with bond revenues.

"It does allow us to finance those major capital projects in the city but it's also important to responsibly manage that," Bennett said. "To be good stewards of the taxpayers' money, we want to make sure we're not overextended ourselves but also trying to meet those project needs the best we can."

With an improving economic outlook and property values on the rise, Bennett said the city would be able to take on even more upgrades in the future.

Councilman Robert Rivera agreed.

"[The bonds are] an investment into our community and it's one that will help us grow and flourish into the future," he said.

Leprechaun talks with Mark Schnyder Live on NBC 5 as Run Down Greenville Ave. takes place.

More Photos and Videos

The spectacle started three hours before the parade… runners in wild get ups beat a path down Greenville Avenue for a 5-k dash.

Kathleen Dowse and Richard Harmer ran it with their rescue dog Henry the pit bull mix who had a green tip of the tail.  They weren't going anywhere after the race.

"I love parades.  I'm a child at heart," said Dowse.  "This was actually a highlight, getting dressed up."

Speaking of getting dressed up.  Did some people forget something?  Marcela Gutierrez had no green on.

We talked to her after she had her best 5-K time ever.

"I was thinking I would focus on the race and set a PR [personal record] and would put a green shirt on afterwards," said Gutierrez.

Ah afterwards.  The big attraction.  90 floats, more than a thousand people on them tossing beads and blaring loud music.  Tens of thousands treated to a near perfect weather day.

"What I really enjoy most about it is all the people, it's just a great celebration, the music, the drinking, all of it," said Kim Gardner who brought her mother with her.

"It's been real exciting," said Moyia Taylor who's at her first Dallas St. Patrick's Day parade since moving here from Kansas City.  "Down toward the end there's people with green hair and wicked costumes.  It's been a real experience."

Police we talked to around 3:00 pm said everyone had been relatively well-behaved.

But NBC 5 did see a fair number of people who apparently had too much to drink, including a woman who opened our live truck asking if we had a bathroom inside.

For the second time in weeks, police are investigating the sexual assault of a woman inside a home along Ferndale Road in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas.

Dallas police said the latest attacked happened Friday, March 15 around 10:00 p.m.  The suspect is described as a man in his 20's. He was 5'8" tall with a round, chubby clean shaven face and short buzz cut hair. He was wearing gray shorts and a jacket. The victim said the suspect spoke English with a Spanish accent.

The first assault happened at a home along Ferndale Road back around 12:45 a.m. on February 22, 2013.  Police said the man broke into the home in the 10800 block of Ferndale Road. The victim was asleep in bed when she was raped at knife point. Police said the suspect description in that case is different from the March 15 attack.

On March 1, Dallas Police officers arrested Fernando Munoz for outstanding warrants. The department also said DNA evidence linked Munoz to a 2010 sexual assault offense in Dallas.

Dallas detectives said they are testing DNA evidence to see if he is connected to as many as four rapes in the East Dallas area.

Photographers from a New York university are hoping you will help them create a unique picture of Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

Scott Saldinger is a graduate from Rochester Institute of Technology in New York and an NBCDFW employee. For 25 years, his alma mater has captivated audiences with the "Big Shot" project.

"[It's] just like if you had a bucket of paint and a brush and you were going up and down and side to side with that paint," said Saldinger. "You're doing that exact same thing with light. So you're applying the light to the building for a long exposure."

Using volunteers, the project has displayed the beauty of the Seabreeze Amusement Park in Rochester, the Erie Canal in Western New York, the Royal Palace in Stockholm and The Alamo in San Antonio.

"This is like a light show you'd see at a concert," Saldinger said. "Every single group that we have is going to have to be moving their lights in order to get the painting done right now" Saldinger said.

Organizers say they need at least 5,000 to create Saturday's photograph.

"I think we have the room to do it," said  Angela Porter with Arlington Camera, one of the shoot's supporters. "I think we have the enthusiasm... and the people to do it,"

Volunteers who participate in Saturday's shoot are encouraged to wear dark clothing and bring a flashlight. You can also use the flash from your smart phone.

"This will never happen there again," said Saldinger. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to have an experience that when you hold that image in your hand, you go 'I helped make that'."

Blue Angel Jet Makes Fort Worth Home

F-A 18 Hornet that flew as part of the Blue Angels will be display at the Veterans Memorial Air Park in Fort Worth.

More Photos and Videos

For years, the US Navy Blue Angels dazzled crowds at North Texas air shows. Now, one of those planes will be on display in Fort Worth.

The F-A 18 Hornet is on loan to the Veterans Memorial Air Park in Fort Worth from the National Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida.

On Saturday, a tractor trailer carried the jet on a flatbed from Louisiana to Fort Worth. It arrived at the museum after a short journey down North Main Street from Loop 820.

"When I heard about it, I said I have got to come down here today and see it," said Fort Worth resident Eric Bartoletti. "It's impressive."

Organizers at the Air Park never thought about trying to acquire a Blue Angels jet, but when the deal to bring another aircraft fell through, the museum in Pensacola offered up the aircraft.

"It's exciting to have this airplane here," said Jim Hodgson, Executive Director of the Veterans Memorial Air Park. "It's really going to put us on the map a little bit more. We've been here for four years.. most people don't even know about us."

Six volunteers spent last week taking the wings off the jet for transport. It may take some time to re-attach the wings.

The jet should be on display for the public to see int he next 3-4 weeks. It is the museum's responsibility to maintain the jet and keep it looking up to the US Navy and the Blue Angels standards.

A teen in a Chicago suburb who was injured in a shooting Friday is believed to have shot himself, officials said, NBC Chicago reported.

The 17-year-old boy was taken to Loyola Hospital in Maywood, IL, with a gunshot wound to his left groin area when he reportedly told police he was shot by two men wearing ninja masks.

Police investigated, talked to witness and reviewed surveillance but found no evidence of the attack and the boy, who has gang ties, confessed that he was driving in a car and playing with a gun when it discharged in his lap, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Medical personnel said the wound reflected self-infliction and officials are working to determine where the incident occurred to determine which police agency has jurisdiction over the case, according to the Tribune.

Disney Bans Children Under 14 From Entering Parks Alone

AP

Disney cast members and employees will not let children under age 14 into the parks alone beginning March 23.

Disney theme parks will soon require anyone under the age of 14 to be accompanied by someone who is older than 14, a Disney spokeswoman said Saturday.

The new policy will take effect March 23 at all U.S. Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts and parks.

"If a cast member who is working at the front gates sees a guest who appears to be younger than 14 without someone who appears to be older than that, they will engage in a conversation with the guest," Disney spokeswoman Suzi Brown told NBC4.

The employee will verbally determine whether the guest is too young to enter on his or her own, since children that age typically do not carry identification with them, she said. The child's parent or guardian would then be contacted if the visitor is underage, and that adult would need to physically come accompany the child into the park.

Disney chose the age of 14 after the company surveyed its guests and reached out to organizations that deal with child welfare, Brown said. She said both the organizations and visitors agreed on the new age limit.

"That was the age they felt was appropriate," she said. "That's also the age the Red Cross recommends for babysitting."

No particular incident triggered the change in policy, Brown added.

"We regularly review all of our policies, and we identified an opportunity to provide a consistent age of admission and address a question we occasionally get from parents, " Brown said. "The question is just if we have a minimum age."

The Disneyland parks did not previously have a set age for solo admission, and the age rules at Walt Disney World Resort varied among the parks, she said.

"This was a move to bring a consistent age policy across our domestic resorts," Brown said.

Oprah named most influential celebrity for second year

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oprah Winfrey was crowned America's most influential celebrity for a second straight year on Friday, despite having dropped off daily television in 2011.

Forbes magazine ranked Winfrey, 59, ahead of Hollywood titans Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood and towering over other TV figures such as journalist Barbara Walters and financial guru Suze Orman.

Forbes said that 48 percent of people surveyed rated Winfrey as influential, down just one point from last year. The list was drawn from polls of Americans conducted by E-Poll Market Research, which ranks more than 7,500 celebrities based on 46 different personality attributes.

Winfrey ended her daily "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in May 2011 after 25 years to launch the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), which features lifestyle programming aimed at women.

After struggling in the ratings since its launch, OWN has seen audiences rise recently, thanks to Winfrey's January world exclusive with cyclist Lance Armstrong admitting to years of doping, and her wide-ranging interview with R&B singer Beyonce.

Forbes noted that Winfrey's magic had rubbed off as well, with one of her protégées, TV physician Dr. Mehmet Oz, ranking sixth on the list.

Film directing, however, seems to be the profession most associated with influence, as four directors, including Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese, crowded into the Top 10.

E-Poll Chief Executive Gerry Philpott said that while influence could mean different things to different people, most often it reflects someone's impact on the culture.

Reflecting on Spielberg's runner-up ranking, Philpott said "To this day, ask anyone what they think about before going in the ocean," referring to the filmmaker's 1975 blockbuster "Jaws."

Dropping out of the Top 10 entirely was last year's No. 2 finisher, actor Michael J. Fox, who has been out of the public eye of late.

Eastwood, who made headlines by addressing an empty chair at the 2012 Republican National Convention, rounded out the Top 10.

The Top 10 Most Influential Celebrities of 2013, according to Forbes are;

1. Oprah Winfrey

2. Steven Spielberg

3. Martin Scorsese

4. Ron Howard

5. George Lucas

6. Dr. Mehmet Oz

7. Barbara Walters

8. U2 frontman Bono

9. Suze Orman

10. Clint Eastwood

Rapper Lil Wayne says he is fine after health scare

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. rapper Lil Wayne said on Friday he was fine and thanked fans for their concern after a reported seizure that led celebrity website TMZ.com to claim he was in a medically induced coma and near death.

"I'm good everybody. Thx for the prayers and love," Wayne said in a Twitter message on his official account.

The 30-year-old rapper's spokeswoman Sarah Cunningham said in an email that "Lil Wayne is recovering," but did not specify what he was suffering from.

She was responding to a TMZ.com report citing unnamed sources which said Wayne was in critical condition, and near death, at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles.

Rapper Mack Maine said in a Twitter posting earlier that Wayne was "alive and well. We watching the Syracuse (basketball) game...thanks for the prayers and concern."

Maine said fans should not "believe the nonsense about comas and tubes to breathe."

TMZ said the rapper was admitted to Cedars-Sinai for seizures and released on Wednesday. But the website said he was readmitted a few hours later after his bodyguard found him unconscious on the floor of his room. It said his mother was flying to Los Angeles on Friday to be at his bedside.

Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., has suffered several unexplained seizures in the past few months, including two in January while on a plane flight.

Wayne, a native of New Orleans, began rapping at the age of nine, when he became the youngest artist to be signed by Cash Money record label.

The "Got Money" rapper has released nine studio albums over a two decade career and has become one of the biggest names in rap music.
