"Listening to it makes you hope it's not a one-off, that his return continues apace."</p> <p>Songs singled out by critics included "Valentine's Day", couched, according to Gill, "in one of the album's most engaging pop arrangements", and "Dancing Out In Space", described by Will Hodgkinson of The Times as a "nightclub smash".</p> <p>"You Feel So Lonely You Could Die", the penultimate track, provides the climax which McCormick calls "fantastic, a lush companion piece to Ziggy's Rock'n'roll Suicide that drips vitriol in place of compassion."</p> <p>Now that the album is complete, the question on many fans' lips is whether Bowie will return to the stage to perform live.</p> <p>The singer himself has dodged the limelight altogether since the comeback, but guitarist Gerry Leonard told Rolling Stone magazine that he thought it was "50-50" that Bowie would tour.</p> <p>The glam-rock star, born David Jones in south London in 1947, shot to fame with "Space Oddity" in 1969, and later with his alter ego Ziggy Stardust, before establishing himself as a chart-topping force in the early 1980s.</p> <p>His long absence from the music scene led to speculation he had retired, with British newspapers reporting as recently as October that he had disappeared from the limelight for good.</p> <p>Bowie's last album of new material was "Reality", released a decade ago, and he underwent emergency heart surgery while on tour in 2004. His last stage performance was as a guest at a charity concert in New York in 2006.</p> <p>(Reporting by Mike Collett-White, editing by Paul Casciato)</p><br /> </div> <script type='text/javascript'> kill_source=true; kill_footer=true; kill_header=true; kill_date=true; kill_google_tracker=true; kill_link_and_ads=true; kill_useless_action=true; kill_all_effect=true; heal_rss_forward("c_content"); </script> </div> <script type='text/javascript'>createSummaryAndThumb("summary4246669746120321909");</script> <div style='float:left;padding:6px 0 0 0;font:normal 12px Arial;'> 11.35 | 0 komentar | <span class='rmlink'><a href='http://asepkendaraan.blogspot.com/2013/02/bowie-is-back-to-best-on-new-album.html'>Read More</a></span> </div> <div style='clear: both;'></div> </div> <div class='post-footer'> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-1'><span class='post-author vcard'> Diposting oleh <span class='fn'>Unknown</span> </span> <span class='post-timestamp'> di <a class='timestamp-link' href='http://asepkendaraan.blogspot.com/2013/02/bowie-is-back-to-best-on-new-album.html' rel='bookmark' title='permanent link'><abbr class='published' title='2013-02-28T11:35:00+07:00'>11.35</abbr></a> </span> <span class='post-comment-link'> <a class='comment-link' href='http://asepkendaraan.blogspot.com/2013/02/bowie-is-back-to-best-on-new-album.html#comment-form' onclick=''>0 komentar</a> </span> <span class='post-icons'> </span> <div class='post-share-buttons'> </div> </div> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-2'><span class='post-labels'> </span> </div> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-3'><span class='post-location'> </span> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class='post-outer'> <div class='post hentry'> <a name='3223234810413023280'></a> <h3 class='post-title entry-title'> <a href='http://asepkendaraan.blogspot.com/2013/02/american-classical-pianist-van-cliburn.html'>American classical pianist Van Cliburn dies at age 78</a> </h3> <div class='post-header'> <div class='post-header-line-1'></div> </div> <div class='post-body entry-content'> <div id='summary3223234810413023280'><div id='c_content'><p>(Reuters) - <span>American pianist Van Cliburn</span>, who awed Russian audiences with his exquisite <span>Tchaikovsky</span> and Rachmaninoff concertos and won fame and fortune back home, died on Wednesday at the age of 78.</p> <p><span>Cliburn</span> passed away at his home in <span>Fort Worth, Texas</span>, after suffering from advanced bone cancer, his publicist <span>Mary Lou Falcone</span> told Reuters. Cliburn announced in August 2012 that he had been diagnosed with the disease.</p> <p>The lanky, blue-eyed Texan, who began taking piano lessons at the age of 3 and later trained at New York's prestigious Juilliard School, burst onto the world stage at the height of the Cold War and was the surprise winner of the first <span>International Tchaikovsky Competition</span> in <span>Moscow</span> in 1958.</p> <p>His performance at the finale led to an eight-minute standing ovation, and the Russian judges asked Soviet leader <span>Nikita Khrushchev</span> for permission to give the top prize to the 23-year-old American.</p> <p>Cliburn's triumph helped spur a brief thaw in U.S.-Soviet relations and made him an overnight sensation in the United States, where his name was known even among those who did not follow classical music.</p> <p>"It was he that was the symbol of peace for the Cold War," Falcone said. "He was embraced by both Eisenhower and Khrushchev in the 1950s and the only musician to have a ticker-tape parade in Manhattan."</p> <p>Time magazine dubbed him "The Texan Who Conquered Russia" in a cover story following his victory, and New York City gave the pianist a hero's welcome upon his return from Russia.</p> <p>Taken on by the powerful impresario Sol Hurok, Cliburn was able to command high fees and practically had carte blanche in the recording studio.</p> <p>His recording of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, which he had played in Moscow, became the first classical album to go platinum and was the best-selling classical album for more than a decade.</p> <p>Fans adored him for his innocence and charm more than for his music-making. In Philadelphia, a shrieking crowd tore the door handles off his limousine. In Chicago, the Elvis Presley fan club changed its name to the Van Cliburn fan club.</p> <p>"He was an international legend," Falcone said. "Personally, he was a giant and publicly he was a giant."</p> <p>But in 1978, Cliburn walked off the stage, professionally exhausted. He played occasionally in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including a performance in the White House for President Ronald Reagan and visiting Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev.</p> <p>TAUGHT PIANO BY HIS MOTHER</p> <p>Critics said the publicity-fueled demand and the public's taste had kept him from growing beyond a relatively narrow collection of romantic pieces, such as his signature Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff concertos.</p> <p>"Despite his fame, the Texas-sized pianist has been widely regarded among serious musicians as an immensely gifted but rather unreflective artist of unfulfilled and probably unfulfillable potential," a New York Times critic wrote after Cliburn's retirement.</p> <p>Born on July 12, 1934, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Harvey Lavan Cliburn Jr. was taught piano by his mother. He gave his first public recital at 4. By age 5, even though he could not read or write, he was completely literate in music.</p> <p>He won several local and regional awards and in 1951 began studies at Juilliard under Rosina Lhevinne. She schooled him in the traditions of the great Russian romantic composers, setting the stage for Cliburn's victory in Moscow seven years later.</p> <p>"My relationship with the Russians was personal, not political," he said in a 1989 interview. He played in Moscow and St. Petersburg when he briefly returned to the concert stage years later.</p> <p>Cliburn, a lifelong Baptist who did not smoke or drink, became a prominent and popular figure in the Fort Worth, Texas, area and was well known for his generosity, contributing vast sums to the Broadway Baptist Church and other causes.</p> <p>He lived on what friends called "Van Cliburn time." He rose in the early evening, would dine at midnight and preside over after-dinner conversations at 4 a.m. Usually heading the dinner table was his mother, Rildia Bee, who lived with him until her death at 97.</p> <p>In 1996, Cliburn was named in a palimony lawsuit by Thomas Zaremba, who claimed a portion of Cliburn's income and assets and accused Cliburn of possibly exposing him to the AIDS virus during a 17-year relationship. The lawsuit eventually was dismissed.</p> <p>Cliburn also supported the <span>Van Cliburn International Piano Competition</span>, a private and nonprofit-based enterprise that offers winners cash prizes, a Carnegie Hall debut and two years of touring arranged and promoted by the competition.</p> <p>He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush in 2003 and was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama in 2011.</p> <p>Cliburn is survived by his long-standing friend, Thomas L. Smith.</p> <p>(Reporting by Eric Kelsey and Paul Simao; Editing by Cynthia Johnston, Alden Bentley, Gary Hill)</p><br /> </div> <script type='text/javascript'> kill_source=true; kill_footer=true; kill_header=true; kill_date=true; kill_google_tracker=true; kill_link_and_ads=true; kill_useless_action=true; kill_all_effect=true; heal_rss_forward("c_content"); </script> </div> <script type='text/javascript'>createSummaryAndThumb("summary3223234810413023280");</script> <div style='float:left;padding:6px 0 0 0;font:normal 12px Arial;'> 11.35 | 0 komentar | <span class='rmlink'><a href='http://asepkendaraan.blogspot.com/2013/02/american-classical-pianist-van-cliburn.html'>Read More</a></span> </div> <div style='clear: both;'></div> </div> <div class='post-footer'> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-1'><span class='post-author vcard'> Diposting oleh <span class='fn'>Unknown</span> </span> <span class='post-timestamp'> di <a class='timestamp-link' href='http://asepkendaraan.blogspot.com/2013/02/american-classical-pianist-van-cliburn.html' rel='bookmark' title='permanent link'><abbr class='published' title='2013-02-28T11:35:00+07:00'>11.35</abbr></a> </span> <span class='post-comment-link'> <a class='comment-link' href='http://asepkendaraan.blogspot.com/2013/02/american-classical-pianist-van-cliburn.html#comment-form' onclick=''>0 komentar</a> </span> <span class='post-icons'> </span> <div class='post-share-buttons'> </div> </div> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-2'><span class='post-labels'> </span> </div> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-3'><span class='post-location'> </span> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div></div> <div class="date-outer"> <div class="date-posts"> <div class='post-outer'> <div class='post hentry'> <a name='7257219212991869316'></a> <div class='post-header'> <div class='post-header-line-1'></div> </div> <h2 class='date-header'><span>Written By Unknown on Rabu, 27 Februari 2013 | 11.35</span> </h2> <div class='post-body entry-content'> <div id='summary7257219212991869316'><div id='c_content'><title>

Janet Jackson says she has married Qatari billionaire

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 26 Februari 2013 | 11.35

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Singer Janet Jackson said on Monday that she married her Qatari businessman boyfriend last year, quashing media reports of upcoming nuptials.

Jackson, 46, the younger sister of the late singer Michael Jackson, was engaged to billionaire Wissam Al Mana, 37, last year but kept the news under wraps.

Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop dies at 96

(Reuters) - Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, whose anti-smoking campaign and outspoken, controversial positions on abortion, AIDS and drugs, elevated the obscure post to one of national influence, died at his home in Hanover, New Hampshire, on Monday. He was 96 years old.

Koop, a pediatric surgeon, served as the leading U.S. spokesman on public health matters and adviser to President Ronald Reagan from November 1981 until October 1989. His death was announced by Dartmouth's Geisel School of Medicine, where he founded the C. Everett Koop Institute.

"Dr. Koop was not only a pioneering pediatric surgeon but also one of the most courageous and passionate public health advocates of the past century," said Dr. Wiley W. Souba, dean of the Geisel School.

The gray-bearded Koop, known for his bow ties and suspenders, became one of most recognizable figures in the Reagan administration.

He took stern and sometimes controversial stands on abortion, AIDS, fatty foods, drugs and cigarettes, and moved through the halls of power convinced that he knew what was best for the nation's health.

Koop enraged the powerful tobacco industry and lawmakers grateful for the industry's generous campaign funds with his insistence that smoking kills and should be banned.

Then, in the midst of a heated national debate about how best to halt the spread of AIDS, Koop blocked the Reagan administration's plans for extensive testing. To the applause of gay rights groups, Koop said the disclosure of the test results, intentional or otherwise, could ruin the careers of those tested.

He spearheaded the drive to make education about AIDS the primary means of preventing the disease, writing a brochure about AIDS that was distributed to millions of American households. Attired in the authoritative white military dress uniform of the Public Health Service and its 7,000-member medical corps he disclosed to the public the glum, often indelicate, details of the disease and how to avoid it.

He urged men to use condoms - if they were unable to abstain from sex - to prevent the spread of AIDS, which is transmitted through semen or blood.

At the time, conservative activist and Koop critic Phyllis Schlafly blasted Koop and his attempts at educating the public as "teaching of safe sodomy in public schools." She demanded, unsuccessfully, that Koop stop preaching about safe sex.

At his confirmation hearings before the Senate, he was blasted by one feminist leader as "a monster" for his deeply held position against abortion.

"He saved countless lives through his leadership in confronting the public health crisis that came to be known as AIDS and standing up to powerful special interests like the tobacco companies," U.S. Representative Henry Waxman, a California Democrat, said on Monday.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 14, 1916, Koop was badly injured as a child in a skiing accident and in playing football, which led him to an interest in medicine.

At 16, he entered Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and later graduated from Cornell Medical School.

Koop was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth, and by their son David, according to Dartmouth.

He is survived by their children Allen Koop, the Rev. Norman Koop and Elizabeth Thompson, as well as by his wife, Cora, whom he married in 2010. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, according to Dartmouth.

Actress Megan Fox to star in new "Ninja Turtles" film

Written By Unknown on Senin, 25 Februari 2013 | 11.35

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Actress Megan Fox has been cast in the new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie, according to filmmaker Michael Bay, who directed the actress in two Transformers films.

The two appear to have resolved their differences after Fox compared Bay to Hitler in a magazine interview. The actress was replaced by British model and actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in the third Transformer film after making the comment.

"TMNT: we are bringing Megan Fox back into the family!" Bay wrote on his website.

Fox's agent confirmed that the 26-year-old new mother would play April O'Neil, the crime-fighting turtles' human friend.

In an interview with the British magazine "Wonderland" in 2009 Fox described Bay as nightmare to work with.

"He wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is," she said.

Bay responded in a 2011 GQ interview saying executive producer Steven Spielberg had advised him to fire Fox.

"Megan loves to get a response," he said. "And she does it in kind of the wrong way."

Bay has said that one of the original creators of the Ninja Turtles was helping to develop the script for the film that is due to be released in May 2014.

The Staple Singers' Cleotha Staples dies at age 78

(Reuters) - Cleotha Staples, a founding member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame R&B and gospel group The Staple Singers, has died after a decade-long battle with Alzheimer's disease, the group said on Friday. She was 78.

Staples, who died on Thursday at her Chicago home, is best known for singing on the group's 1970s hits, including "I'll Take You There," "Respect Yourself" and "Let's Do It Again."

"We will keep on," Mavis Staples, the group's lead singer, said in a statement. "Yvonne and I will continue singing to keep our father's legacy and our sister's legacy alive."

Mavis, who is known for her raspy voice that gave the group its distinct personality, said she would dedicate her forthcoming album to Cleotha's memory.

The oldest of five children, Staples was born in Drew, Mississippi, to Roebuck "Pops" Staples and Oceola Staples. The family moved to Chicago when Staples was 2 years old in 1936, where sisters Mavis and Yvonne were born.

The Staple Singers, known as "God's greatest hitmakers," were formed in 1948 with Pops on guitar and siblings Mavis, Cleotha, Pervis and Yvonne singing.

The group first played churches in the Midwest and put out their first recording in 1953. Their gospel hits included "On My Way to Heaven," "With the Circle Be Unbroken" and "Pray On."

The family became active in the civil rights movement in 1962 after hearing Martin Luther King Jr. speak while the family was on tour. They are thought to be the first black group to cover Bob Dylan's song "Blowin' in the Wind" in 1963.

The Staples Singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and were honored with a lifetime achievement Grammy in 2005.

Cleotha Staples is survived by her sisters Mavis and Yvonne and brother Pervis.

"Future Self" Photos Aim to Inspire Retirement Savings

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 24 Februari 2013 | 23.14

Inspired by a study that suggests people are more inclined to save for retirement if they can see their "future selves," a financial company has created a computer app that ages users' photos and breaks down the estimated cost of living at their retirement age. Mekahlo Media reports for the NBC4 News at Noon on Feb. 20, 2013.

If you could see a picture of yourself 40 years in the future, would it change the way you live today?

That's the theory behind a new computer program, launched by Merrill Edge, a financial platform created by Bank of America. Face Retirement takes a picture of your face and reveals a photo of what you will look like in the "near-far" future—all the way up to age 107.

"The app was created to really provoke more Americans to plan more for their retirement," Nick Givogri, senior vice president of Merrill Edge, said.

Science seems to support the idea. A study at Stanford University last year showed that people who viewed their "future self" were more likely to put money in a retirement account.

"Essentially, what the study showed is that people that saw aged-enhanced images of themselves were twice as likely to save for retirement than people who did not," Givogri said. "It's amazing what will happen when you just see an image of yourself in the future."

Next to the age-processed photos are statistics that show what the estimated cost of living will be when the user reaches retirement age. A harsh reality: in the year 2040, the average cost for a loaf of bread is predicted to cost $9.

"What the research showed is that people that were able to see what they looked like in the future, started to think about, 'Well, what do I need to be doing during that time?'" Givogri said.

Merrill Edge said more than 450,000 people have taken a look at the app – which can be accessed using a webcam at the company's website – since December and about 10 percent of those users shared their photo on Facebook.

So what resources do people have if they want to look into future planning options?

"They can open up an IRA account if they wanted to get started with retirement planning. They can find a financial advisor locally; we have over 300 finical advisors that sit in Bank of America Banking Center that can really help people in planning," Givogri said.

"I think a lot of it is that people think about the here and the now and those are the things they focus on, being able to make the monthly bills and do those types of things, but (the app) really starts to get you to think differently."

As violence continues to grip Chicago, area teens are presenting their ideas on how to curb the seemingly endless violence to city leaders Saturday.

More than 500 teens are expected to submit their proposals and brainstorm with Chicago officials Saturday afternoon at the Youth Solutions Congress. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is expected to attend the event.

The youths have come up with solutions to issues surrounding Chicago such as jobs and education.

Dr. Richard Jones, senior vice president of community investment from United Way Chicago, reportedly addressed the teens and emphasized the importance of young advocates.

"Youth Solutions Congress improves youth opportunities by allowing young people to directly impact Chicago policies," one of the attendees tweeted.

The groups goals for the day are to share their opinions on the biggest issues facing Chicago youth, discuss and debate solutions, choose top 15 solutions and commit to being advocates.

The event comes just one day after teen mother Janay McFarlane's funeral and one week after President Barack Obama spoke to Chicagoans on the issue of violence.

McFarlane, 18, was shot hours after her sister attended the President's speech, which featured another slain area teen and gun violence victim Hadiya Pendleton.

McFarlane's younger sister, 14-year-old Destini Warren said the President's speech "really connected to what was going on."

The President's speech called for "commonsense" reforms such as comprehensive background checks and a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
But he acknowledged that violent crime isn't just a gun issue. He said it's also a matter of building communities and shared and personal responsibility.

To strengthen families and communities, the president called for an expansion of early childhood education, the growth of programs similar to Chicago's "College to Careers" program, and tax breaks to business owners to hire and invest in rough neighborhoods.

A man is being held on $3 million bond in connection with McFarlane's murder.

Taya Kyle Honored by Dallas Stars

Thousands of people honored former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and his wife, Taya, on Saturday night.

On February 11, Taya Kyle moved everyone who watched her husband's memorial service at Cowboys Stadium. Saturday night she said she was overwhelmed by the cheers for her and her husband at the American Airlines Center.

"We would like to thank and welcome Taya Kyle," the public address announcer said Saturday.
A thunderous ovation from the Dallas Stars and their fans welcomed and honored Taya and Chris Kyle.

"I know he'd be humbled," Taya Kyle said. "It's an honor of course as his wife. I'm thrilled. I love to see it, what better way to honor someone you love than to see an outpouring of love for them?"

Taya Kyle was on hand to drop the ceremonial puck with Miss Texas USA Ali Nugent.

"She's a great person," Nugent said. "This was already planned for me to do and I figured why not invite her. Her husband is a true hero and he deserves to be honored."

For Taya Kyle though it was also a chance to get away from the last three weeks of grief, if even for just a few hours.  Kyle's husband and his friend Chad Littlefield were gunned down at a shooting range in Erath County February 2. Eddie Ray Routh, a Marine reservist, has been charged in their deaths.

"It definitely doesn't seem real sometimes," Kyle said. "I think we're actually coping as well as we can. I feel like living with Chris, being with Chris, being married to Chris, we all got a lot of strength that we can draw from him and our experiences in the past and do it as well as we possibly can."

And having the kind of support she saw on Saturday night helps too.

"It's overwhelming," Kyle said. "I mean, think about the worst things that you can go through and the overwhelming support, love and patriotism, it's fantastic.  I love the patriotism, I love my husband, I wish he was here. I'm proud to be here in his place, it's cool."

Taya Kyle says she's busy being a mom and raising her two children. She did say she hopes to keep many of the projects her husband is involved with alive for him.

Nugent is in the running for Miss USA. She's started an organization called "Crown's for Heroes" which builds homes for service members seriously injured overseas and have special needs.

She's already raised money to help build several homes already and hopes to build more by the time Miss USA comes around. For more information click here.

Nearly 100 Rescued from Dallas Zoo Monorail

Dallas firefighters were called to the Dallas Zoo after a malfunction stranded approximately 100 people on a monorail. The ride will be shutdown Sunday.

Dallas firefighters were called to the Dallas Zoo after a malfunction stranded 93 people on a monorail.

Dallas Fire-Rescue was called to the scene at about 3:30 p.m.

Fortunately, the monorail stopped at a location that was easily reached by firefighters.  Using as many as five extension ladders, firefighters were able to remove all of the trapped passengers from the monorail in about a half hour.

"It stopped a very fortunate place because it was such a low point there, very accessible," Sean Greene, Dallas Zoo Vice President of Guest Services. "It didn't impede any animals, didn't impede the experience over the elephants. But obviously for those 93 passengers they wouldn't like to have completed their journey."

There were no injuries in connection with the malfunction or rescue but certainly rattled nerves.

"Actually [this was] my wife's first time on the monorail," said Jerry Davis, one of the people rescued. "I've been on it once before and this was definitely a first."

The cause of the malfunction has not been determined.  The monorail will be shutdown on Sunday.

Shooting hoops is no problem for one otter at the Oregon Zoo.

Eddie the otter was trained by zoo staff to dunk a basketball in a small plastic hoop. However the exercise isn't simply for some playtime.

He is currently 15 which is pretty old for an otter, and with age comes ailments as with all creatures. His fur was once a rich brown color but now his coat is creamy white around his face and neck. He also has developed arthritis in his elbows. Dunking the basketball helps the balling animal's arthritic joints.

He usually sinks the ball with ease. But when he does miss, he hits the boards, grabs the rebound and goes up again until he scores.

Eddie makes most of his shots. But when he misses, he hits the boards, grabs the rebound and goes up again until he scores.

Sea otters have incredible dexterity which explains Eddie's talent, according to keeper Jenny DeGroot.
